In 2010, the Martinsville Youth and Development Center (MYDC) was formed by the late Ron Taylor, the former Board President. Mr. Taylor’s vision was to help bridge the youth out of poverty and provide a safe haven for them to come to during their most at-risk hours. On December 5, 2012, the MYDC was incorporated and a new board of directors was formed consisting of local business executives, educators, and philanthropists also determined to help Martinsville’s at-risk youth.
Our mission is to foster children after school and during the summer with programs that promote emotional, mental, physical, and social development. The purpose of the center is to promote and allow children in poverty, at risk after school, to have a safe haven, a good snack (nutrition), and mentors to help guide and support their personal growth. The most critical time they are at risk, with little or no supervision, and a lack of direction is from 2:30 pm to 7:00 pm each school day, which will be the center’s hours of operation during the week. The center will be open during the summer for summer camps, field trips, and other activities.
Board of Directors
The MYDC Board of Directors is a team of successful and helpful minded people qualified to lead and serve their community with the completion and implementation of the Martinsville Youth Center. The board is made up of school officials, community leaders, business owners, school board members, county council members, and teachers who assist in providing and sustaining services to the low-income youth in the community.
